Ann's Presentation: "The Socially Acceptable Stereotype: Writing the New Seniors"

A white-haired couple walks on the beach in pale blue linen. A group of older women sit around a table playing canasta and talking oh so earnestly about life insurance. We’ve all seen these depictions of older generations in the media, but the people in these ads do not look or act anything like me or my friends: we are children of the 60s after all! After having a mind-blowing experience of ageism from an editor in a top five publisher, I have made it my quest to modernize the way older people are depicted. In this presentation we’ll talk about our responsibility as writers to break the “age-old” stereotypes and more accurately reflect the new senior citizens, whether we are of that age ourselves or not.

Ann Dávila Cardinal is a Vermont author with an MFA in Writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Her young adult novels include Five Midnights, Category Five, Breakup from Hell, and the upcoming You’ve Awoken Her. She co-wrote a middle grade biography of Latin trap artist Bad Bunny, and her adult novels include The Storyteller’s Death, which won gold in the International Latino Book Awards, and We Need No Wings. Ann is a part-time bookseller in Stowe, lives in Morrisville, and is currently working on a punk rock Miss Marple series. https://anndavilacardinal.com/

LVW Leadership

LVW is member-driven and guided by a 10-member, all volunteer board of directors which is voted on by the general membership at the annual January meeting.

Five directors serve as officers: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and Immediate Past President. The other five serve as at-large directors. View descriptions of these these positions.

The League Board of Directors facilitates decision-making, initiatives, and forward movement that benefit the growth and sustainability of the organization as whole. It holds quarterly meetings, either in-person or via digital means. It conducts business via mail, phone and email correspondence. The board governs by the guidance of the organization’s bylaws.

At the annual January business meeting, members hear reports from the board of directors and various other committees regarding LVW’s progress towards achieving its mission, the status of the organization's financial situation, and goals for the coming year. The members elect officers and directors; and vote on other business items concerning the general membership.
